Since "Emoticon" is derived from "Emotion" which in turn has a Latin root and the Ancient Greeks came before Latin existed that makes some sense.  angel1

Before we had this  eveilgrin:  we had to send one of these by horse and cart ... it took bloody ages but there was little else going on.
