Adding ....al

Ok English grammar boffins out there ...what purpose does it serve putting the suffix al onto the end of the word?

For example  someone today said something was problematical ......why can't it just be problematic ???

I am equally annoyed by those who add "To" when it is unnecessary (to)  cussing:
