XP is not a problem

No spare disk at the moment - don't know what connector - may have one by the time I leave here

Will try and extract data first
Then work out if drive is duff or if XP can be re-installed.

Wrong time of year for trying to get a new drive quickly, unless you want to pay top dollar at Maplins.

I'd pay £45

Assuming it is a 3½" drive in that box...? Shrugs:

Big Pockets Refurb Job?

here is the bloody thread!  Banghead

I don't think it is a big pockets thing... perhaps the hard drive has failed, perhaps it is a virus or BIOS issue... worst case scenario should be a new disc and several hours of tel's time at £100 per hour or part thereof....  scared2:

Well, all PCs have built-in obsolescence otherwise they'd have stopped selling them years ago... I don't think Dell is any worse than the rest...

This is worst-case scenario a hard drive failure - Dell wouldn't have even made the hard drive, it will be a standard off-the-shelf part like the CPU, memory, etc, etc.

It has been many years since companies like HP manufactured the entire system including the discs, memory and CPU!  lol:

I know  ;)

But you don't expect me not to uphold your reputation as a miser now do you?

Actually I have bad experiences with Dell ~ mainly due to their service policies ~ so I scrapped my Dell and switched to HP. Once you have poor service you tend to stop being logical and hold it against the company forever. Okay, I prolly had a bad 'un and that happens with any company but it still leaves me with a hooge prejudice against them. That said I have one of their laser printers and it is excellent .... and I do realise that they sub-contract the making to others. About the only real connection with Dell on my printer is the name on the front ~ prolly the same with their 'pooters. All made by nimble little fingers in China.

I used to work for the primary reseller of HP computer hardware in the UK... we sold loads of their computer systems and peripherals... All loaded with their proprietary components.

One day we were building a new model 'Vectra' personal computer (you had to order all the parts separately and assemble it for the customer) when we realised that the memory modules were a standard 'SIMM' instead of the usual HP manufactured parts that we were used to.

We made a fortune over the next year or so filling these things up with cheap SIMMs from a component distributor while charging customers for the much more expensive 'HP Part'....  ;D
