Sampling music

Heard some music as I was passing through the lounge tonight and thought it sounded like an old motown track. Put my head round the door to see who it was and found it was Amy Winehouse with Tears Dry On Their Own. Apparently (and some young people refuse to accept it) she has sampled Aint No mountain High Enough by Marvin gaye and Tammi Terrell. And as well as sampling that, she's sampled the video from Massive Attack-the walking through the street bumping into people (or was it Verve did it first?)

She did a gig in Cornwall a while back, walked off the set part way through and then when she came back on stage spent the rest of the time fiddling with her shorts  eeek:

I hate music ?samples? primarily because the finished product is always shite compared to the original that they stole the sample from.

In the same way what is the point of releasing a cover version of a track that is exactly the same as the original? Either interpret the lyrics or music in a different way, add to it or just play the original bloody record.

It depends on why you sample the track though, you can always tell the difference between someone who is passionate about music sampling a track because they love it and it fits in perfectly with the piece they are working in as opposed to the shameless commercial rip off (Oasis comes to mind there).
