Folk Dancing
« on: July 22, 2007, 07:40:56 AM »
I posted about this once before in a previous life?

When I was in the UK I thought folk dancing was completely shite ? all those Morris Dancers poncing about clacking their sticks ? who in their right mind would actually volunteer for an evening of that crap rather than going down the pub, eating out or watching a movie? I mean, it is a stupid minority pastime for people too stupid to spot trains?

Since I?ve been here though I?ve realised the error of my ways.

Here is Cyprus there is a proud tradition of dancing in the village ? young people (boys and girls) learn the old dances and display them at every opportunity in front of their proud parents and other villagers.

We went to the annual folk festival at the local amphitheatre last night where the village dance group hosted dancers from all over the world ? the team from Ecuador complete with band and pan pipes was absolutely awesome.

Not only does the dancing provide an entertaining spectacle (and no doubt even more so if you really understand the stories behind them) but I believe it really does improve society. These youngsters and teenagers are proud of their culture and heritage. They enjoy being together and working as a team, they enjoy dancing in front of their elders ? they are proud of their skills.

My gripe is that the UK has lost many of its traditions and is poorer for it. If young Wayne and Tracy spent more time learning their culture instead of drinking alcopops, smoking fags and shagging the place would be a whole lot better off.

Next time I see Morris Dancers performing I?ll be less inclined to throw my empty beer can at them I can tell you.

Whatever floats their boat .... as the saying goes.

Given sufficient alcohol I have been know to listen to folk singers of the "I've suffered for my music and now it's your turn" variety and even cheer the arrival of the Morris Dancers. Funny how one behaves on a warm summer evening in a Dorset pub garden.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

I became aware of the same thing spending time in France and watching the traditional dancing stuff emerge in every town and village.

I noted how good at it they were and how it bound them into a real community, there were foreign versions touring around that were warmly welcomed into their midst, a good time was had by all, from the oldest to the babes-in-arms.

And the British were nowhere to be seen,  not as dancers or spectators even.  we seem to be above all that.

Mores the pity.

You got that right ? it was a fantastic free show in the village amphitheatre yet hardly any of the expats turned up?  noooo:

I?m not sure I?m happy about being paired-up with Nick? if we need a team could we not just send Nick and The Boy?  eveilgrin:

In fact, we could have a vote on it while they are in the air?  whistle:

Given the proximity of Barman's homebrew?

Well it would serve Landlady right for rubbing it in about how good the weather is over there in another thread  eveilgrin:

Actually I've just had an idea, Nick can win the so called 'war on terror' in 4 steps.

Step 1 - Send Nick to Iraq. Insurgents bugger off to Afghanistan in a panic
Step 2 - Send Nick to Afghanistan. Same result as for Iraq, insurgents bugger off in mass panic
Step 3 - Start rumours about Nick visiting various countries subtly shepherding Bin Laden et al to bikini Atoll
Step 4 - Have Nick drop off supply of Barman's homebrew to Atoll

Result:

War won, problem solved.  point:
