What is the point of a small birth certificate ?
« on: February 12, 2011, 08:02:42 AM »

Why do they exist is all I want to know. They still charge to get a copy of these but are not accepted as proof of ID of for any 'official ' purposes.

So why have them then ? Do they have any value ?

They fit into those books that people buy to keep a record of their baby's first years. The full certificate, which is free, does not fit into these twee albums. I know of people who include in these "records" their baby's scans as "Little Mary's first photograph".  sick2:

Scans as photographs  sick2: I got a plaster cast handprint  from the first grandchild also  sick2:

The small birth certificate makes a great piece of paper for crayoning on in red wax crayon or that's what daughter number 1 thought when she was three.

My cousin became a Grandmother some four years ago ... when she proudly announced, during a weekend visit, that her son was "expecting" I had to point out that it was in fact her daughter in law who was the pregnant one not her son ... Undeterred she then produced copies of the scans and pointed out how like her son the 12 week foetus was.  ::)

They are provided for use when you don't need to show a full certificate. They do not include many of the details such as father's name, occupation etc and are not therefore acceptable as prove of identity for passport applications and the like.
They are perfectly acceptable as proof of identity for other purposes (For example to open a bank account ~ used one for daughter when her full cert was with the passport office) but they are of no use to genealogists.
At one time, when they were first brought in the plan was to replace the full certificate (which is an exact copy of the registration entry) but that idea fell by the wayside. The full certified copy + one small certificate are issued when a birth is registered.

Removes genealogist's hat.

RBS accepted one ~ maybe the fact that I have other accounts with them helped 8)

Tell me were they stoopid enough to ask to see a utility bill in her name to prove her residence?

Wife had probs with that .... all bills are in my name.

Birth Cert tells them sod all accept her age and the fact she is British born. Proves little else and that can be done with the short version.

My verdict ~ Poor staff training!

But if questioned I'm happy to bet they would trot out a lot of bulls hit about identity theft.

I have the full birth certs of many of my ancestors .. they cost £7 each to get from the National Records Office ..... I could take any one of them in as proof of identity.

I hope you said: "What, stuck inside some woman?"

They are for sticking on the fridge to remind you of the childs birthday, and/or the name of its father.

I mostly despair

The  bank is the same as mine and I had lots of proof of my identity but said they needed her full birth certificate so they could ensure my details were the same on there .
