Explosion
« on: July 12, 2011, 03:42:25 AM »
This has been something of a national tragedy and the country is officially in three days of mourning...

Some pictures.

We have lost a huge amount of electricity generating capacity at a time of peak demand due to the heatwave. As a result we are warned of water shortages (due to switching off desalination plants and lack of electricity to pump it) and rolling power cuts.

We have no water here at the moment - there is no power to pump it up to the hill where the village is based - they're hoping to have some generators installed by Wednesday...

So I may not be on the board as much for a while which should please you all!  lol:

Not so smug now eh...?  rubschin:

Had it not been for the Cyprus contingent I and I suspect most here wouldn't have even heard about this. While not underplaying the magnitude of what occurred, three days mourning seems excessive, is that the normal sort of reaction to rare events like this over there?

(oh, and off for a bath shortly)

It does seem to have hit them quite badly... the public were out in the streets all over the island demanding the government resign... There have been a couple of ministers that have fallen on their swords which is quite refreshing compared to the UK...

Three days morning seems a little OTT tho - I wonder if some element of that is to keep people out of work while they try and stitch the system back together as best they can...

Apparently Greece is sending a couple of 60MW generating sets over...

I'm just looking at buying a generator on Tintermong in case it gets worse instead of better...  redface:

This is interesting.

Shows our generating capacity (blue) against consumption (red) and explains why we are now having power cuts all the time...

How long do you think the cuts will go on for. You seem better informed than us.

Well... I understand it will be months and months before they can re-build the power station...

But they have these two mahooosive generators arrive from Greece which will help greatly...

And the dams have plenty of water so they don;'t really have to use the desalination....

So, professor barman's forecast is that we'll have disruption for a few weeks or so before they get on top of it...

I was listening to the news of Forces Radio this morning - all their schools are closed but I thought the general outlook was quite optimistic...

I guess we'll just have to wait and see... Shrugs:

Guess so. Just wish we knew when it was going to go out, can plan my day then. Need the net for work etc and I am worried I will get a last minute booking and wont know about it. People dont phone anymore just email. Gonna get in touch with the different companies and tell them to call instead I think.

Some of the cafes on the harbour couldn't open yesterday cos they all had electric security roller blinds on the front.  noooo:

I know... you simply don't realise how much you rely on it... all my water is pumped so I have nothing when it goes off...  evil:

And couldn't get the car out yesterday morning cos we have electric gates...

And you know that annoying thing that you do... when the power is off you walk into a dark room and still switch the light on...? Well now I'm finding I walk into a dark room when the power is on and don't put the bloody lights on!  cussing:

Ha ha, I know! I suggested last night that if it went off again we could sit and read in the garden by the outdoor lights.  doh:

My neighbour called (while the power was off) and asked if I could get an update on the news as I have recently fitted a TV aerial on the roof...  noooo:
