Storage Space
« on: September 15, 2011, 07:12:03 AM »
It is becoming much more common that I am tootaling along and thinking about various things. That would be a good idea I thinks. Must do that I thinks. Must get that I thinks.

Half an hour later when trying to retrieve my thoughts I can't for the life of me remember what I was going to do. It may be that several days later , often when no longer required , they will come flooding back.

I have ruled out alzheimer's as a possibility cos there is no chance I can spell that so have come to the conclusion that my head is full and needs to be defragged.

What is the best way to get rid of stuff in there I no longer need so that I can remember stuff again ?

If I can't defrag it can I use the sectors that are unavailable ?  rubschin:

There are some of them aren't there ?

What is the point of them if you can't use em ?

The human brain has infinite storage capacity ..... default mode is that it packs away all the unimportant stuff in order that it can deal with the more immediate. Training the brain is the only way to guarantee instant recall. Try giving your random ideas a "trigger" that will enable recall on demand. If you can't do this then do what the rest of us do and don't worry about it. My method is to ignore what I can't remember in the sure and certain knowledge that it will return at the most unexpected times.

There you go ~ a sensible answer for once.

Now what were we talking about?   tunble:

The human brain has infinite storage capacity .....

How is that even possible  - there must be a limit surely or upgrades that are required ?

The human brain consists of about one billion neurons. Each neuron forms about 1,000 connections to other neurons, amounting to more than a trillion connections. If each neuron could only help store a single memory, running out of space would be a problem. You might have only a few gigabytes of storage space, similar to the space in an iPod or a USB flash drive. Yet neurons combine so that each one helps with many memories at a time, exponentially increasing the brain’s memory storage capacity to something closer to around 2.5 petabytes (or a million gigabytes). For comparison, if your brain worked like a digital video recorder in a television, 2.5 petabytes would be enough to hold three million hours of TV shows. You would have to leave the TV running continuously for more than 300 years to use up all that storage.

The brain’s exact storage capacity for memories is difficult to calculate. First, we do not know how to measure the size of a memory. Second, certain memories involve more details and thus take up more space; other memories are forgotten and thus free up space. Additionally, some information is just not worth remembering in the first place.

This is good news because our brain can keep up as we seek new experiences over our lifetime. If the human life span were significantly extended, could we fill our brains? I’m not sure. Ask me again in 100 years.

The adult human brain weighs on average about 3 lb (1.5 kg) with a size (volume) of around 1130 cubic centimetres (cm3) in women and 1260 cm3 in men, although there is substantial individual variation.Men with the same body height and body surface area as women have on average 100g heavier brains, although these differences do not correlate in any simple way with gray matter neuron counts or with overall measures of cognitive performance. Neanderthals, an extinct subspecies of modern humans, had larger brains at adulthood than present-day humans. The brain is very soft, having a consistency similar to soft gelatin or soft tofu. Despite being referred to as "grey matter", the live cortex is pinkish-beige in color and slightly off-white in the interior. At the age of 20, a man has around 176,000 km and a woman about 149,000 km of myelinated axons in their brains.

This difference in brain size may explain much  whistle:

Around the Kennels such "senior moments" are referred to as "CRAFT Moments"

CRAFT = "Can't Remember A Fvcking Thing"
